Inspiring Ideas for Teachers, iTunes U courses

Try as I might, I could not open any of these apps. I tried on numerous days and all I see after I “get” the app is a cloud with an arrow and no option to open or view the app. Ok, wait…let me try some thing…ok, there it is…I know have 18 new iBooks (I thought these were apps). Let us go with Skitch Lesson Ideas 6433642 (http://www.appsinclass.com/skitch.html). This is a fairly straight forward app with the core being that you can take a picture and write on it and insert arrows to make a clearer point (like pointing at the stamen in a flower with a bright arrow) or outline shapes and add a description (the example shows shapes on a fire hydrant with a description of the shape). The most useful feature of this would be to help with foreign language as you can take a picture of someone’s face and list what the areas are in whatever language you are studying, plus it personalizes the lesson.

Did I mention that I feel like a fool for missing where the app downloaded to?

Using Apps in the Classroom, iTunes U Courses

Rise of the Frankensuffies: The Industrial Revolution d3_100_2x (https://itunes.apple.com/om/course/rise-frankenstuffies-industrial/id958991160) has 65 assignments in the folder and 20 posts. A frankensuffie is a plush toy that consists of multiple parts from other plush toys sewn together, like this frankenstuffie. Three titles that I liked were Introduction: Steampunk, Mechanization Revolution and Rise of the Frankenstuffie Project. To find this on my I-Pad you just go to iTunes U and there it is, it is the only thing in there, as of now. This lesson plan was a little confusing for me. It combines the elements of history, social studies, science and fantasy. It is based on a steampunk novel called Leviathan, which has nothing really to do with history or social studies, as it is a fictional era. It also has you “create” a frankenstuffie (described above) with some mechanical components that will make it move. This lesson plan is supposed to teach about the industrial revolution, however I could not figure out where steampunk or frankenstuffies fit into it. It was an interesting project and it would be fun to participate in, I am just not sure how history is being covered with it.

Interactive Whiteboards & Screencasting, My first Screencast!

499

This time I created a little white board demonstration using Educreations  4 (https://www.educreations.com/). This was not as difficult as I thought it would be. The controls are very easy to use, you can take a picture, use one on the i-Pad or for the creative type, draw your own. It gives you a pen option with five color options and the widely used eraser button (for mistakes or excessive doodling).  The main feature is your voice narrating the picture. I found that by switching the recording button on and off, I could change thoughts easier than trying to talk the whole time. I did take two pictures and was able to switch between them and record only when I was ready to. I liked this simple app. It might be fun to make little videos for my daughter to encourage her to clean up (she is 19) and do her chores.

I do NOT appreciate that they say the app is free then to save the video you made they want either $11.99 a month or $99.99 for the year. THAT is misleading and inaccurate.

Week 10 Reflection, Tech Edge in the Classroom

These videos were shown on i-Tunes and did not have a link to youtube.com

https://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/tech-edge-ipad-edition-utility/id663441412?mt=10#

This one was released on 6/15/2015 episode #167 Making the i-Pad Safe for Children this showed how to limit the access on the i-Pad and still have the children be able to have access to learning resources. I did like the ability to limit safari and create a separate account for guests.

The next one Why i-Pads? episode #139 released on 11/24/2014

https://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/tech-edge-ipad-edition-utility/id663441412?mt=10#.

Here the host talks about how the i-Pad is a superior device for learning over a smart board as it is mobile and that it has a camera. Also, it has the ability to utilize apps. He also believes that the touch interface is very important and is intuitive to young students as well as the voice interface. He also says that the size of the usable screen is a good useable feature.

The last one i chose is episode #119 Word Processing apps

https://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/tech-edge-ipad-edition-utility/id663441412?mt=10#

There are the base processors Pages, made by Apple and Quick (this one is build specifically for mobile devices) these focus on the basics of word processing but it does have the ability to use multiple languages on the integrated keyboard. Bothe of these documents can be shared in real time and are compatible with other word processors. He also mentions that Microsoft finally has made Word available for the mobile devices.

I kind of knew about the processors but delving into the settings and restrictions was fun. I am confused as to why there are so many apps for word processing available for the i-Pad. This is a mobile device and was not meant to replace a laptop or desktop computer. There seems to be many options for processing that appear on an almost daily basis. While they come in handy in a pinch, i still prefer a desktop for my essays…but I’m old.

Adventures in the Laundry Room

Here is my video trailer Adventures in the Laundry Room that I made using the app comicbook (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/comicbook!/id436114747?mt=8) with the link to view it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW2S049ImeA). The app was pretty easy to use, but the hard part was trying to figure out what I wanted to make. Thankfully, a trip to my daughter’s room solidified the idea. She jumped at the idea of the “nothing clean” outfit. The music that was chosen for the template I used was very fitting (and dramatic). You could choose different templates that had their own layouts and music. I liked this one for the galaxy opening. It was easy to edit and change my video pieces as well as being very user friendly. Maybe I will use it again, in the future (I have an anniversary coming up). Just plan ahead before you decide to start…it was very difficult to come up with an idea (and it was only a minute and a half).

Comic Books! Review

i used the ComicBook! app comicbook (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/comicbook!/id436114747?mt=8). It was not hard to create a comic what was hard was coming up with an idea for a comic strip and finding pictures that fit correctly. There is an option to change how the picture looks, such as manga, comic or black & white. There are various options for dialogue boxes and animation and additions to the pictures. There is even an option to change the cell structures and shapes. Other than funny cartoons to illustrate my quirky side and the lighter side of facs I am not sure how I might integrate it. Any how, see below…

Reflection 4: Two Guys and Some I-Pads

This review is for Two Guys and Some I-Pads (http://www.twoguysandsomeipads.com/) by these guys…brad bk Brad waid and BK 2 Drew Minock. They bill their website as “the leader in augmented reality”. They have a lot of links for apps like collar (the 3-d coloring project we did) and similar 3-d programs. The one for the solar system and the virtual racetrack were really cool looking (and yes, I got the Toy Car RC app). I do like the 3-d apps that are available, I think they give the student a better perspective on things (literally a third perspective). This blog is more geared towards the elementary or middle school crowd, however it does appeal to the child in me, as well. I think that it would make for a resource for great starter apps that can be expanded on in later grade levels.

Though, I did not like the ad for Bell Scotch on their website.

Reflection 3: Moving at the Speed of Creativity

This week I chose to review Moving at the Speed of Creativity imageby Wesley A. Fryer image(http://www.speedofcreativity.org/). Doctor Fryer teaches STEM in the 4th and 5th grades. in Oklahoma. He has authored several books on how to effectively use digital technologies for communication, story telling and assess learning. He recently (Jan 2015) hosted a full day I-Pad workshop at Kansas State University. There are multiple links to various blogs that pertain to the use of technology in the classroom. There is a link (that did not seem to work) that covers twitter use by local police and that one happened here in Manhattan. There are student and educator workshops that Doctor Fryer hosts as well as a blog that is, essentially run by the classroom.

Reflection 2: Free Technology for Teachers

I chose to review  Byrne(http://www.freetech4teachers.com/) as using newer technology in the classroom is a fairly recent concept for me and I could use all the help I can get. Richard Byrne has been writing this blog since June 2001 ( I was in Korea and a Gateway computer) and has won Edublog’s Best Resource Sharing Blog five times (so I think he is pretty good at it). He taught high school Social Studies for eight and a half years. He was a pioneer in technology at his school having started a 1:1 laptop program before the rest of the school did. His blog is followed by over 60,000 educator…DAILY.

There is a section that covers Web Tools for Educators, it is a 83 page pdf that covers tech websites with a link and solid description of what they offer on the site broken down by education level (elementary, middle and high schools). There is even a section for ESL/ELL classes.

He has a section with I-Pad apps for School,  Practical Ed Tech and even a section for Android use in the classroom (the operating system not REAL androids). One of the featured apps is the New York Public Library’s Biblion ny biblion (http://exhibitions.nypl.org/biblion/worldsfair) an app that shows pictures videos and documents from the 1939-1940 World’s Fair (which, surprisingly enough was held in New York). The media contained in the app has been arranged into thematic stories, theses stories “…showcase the innovations that were on display in 1940 as well as the predictions for the future”. It even goes on to explain why the inventions were significant.

I like this web site and will DEFINATLY be coming back. I am “old school (literally) when I was in school we had film projectors and VCRs (that’s video cassette recorders…I am old). The technology that is being used in the classroom today is a little more “technical” than I am used too, but I learn quick and do enjoy a tech challenge.

Word Clouds in the Classroom

The app that I am reviewing today in Cloudart Cloudart http://cloudart-app.com/ . This app cost me a whopping .99 (wish I would have found it on a free day) and I think it was worth it. By taking words, in my case cooking techniques Cloudart arranges them in a random pattern, with a chosen color scheme. The result is a colorful randomly created presentation that is easier to create than trying to do it in PowerPoint (and I am NOT a big fan of PowerPoint).

I looked at what the control features were and viewed some of the examples that they had (although I did find this neat tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1KOCgzVdIU). It was fairly easy to use, but I was not able to find a way to redo an entire project. You can add words, remove words or (in my case) correct spelling. You can change the size of the words to emphasize it’s importance, the font style and color and background colors. I played a little bit with the randomizer that changes everything (font, color, animation) for you.

I liked the final product on this, I wish it was easier to add words other than one at a time or even add a picture. It creates a colorful display that will liven up a classroom, but I do feel it might be a better app for younger students…but, hey who doesn’t like a pop of color?
